Macau is a small peninsula located in Southeast Asia, approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of Hong Kong, bordering China. Made up of Macau city and the islands of Taipa and Coloane, Macau is currently slightly over 28 square kilometers.
Macau is joined to the Chinese province of Guangdong by a narrow land corridor. Because of land reclamation, Macau has enlarged its territory by 50 percent since 1912.
On December 20th 1999, Macau was established as a Special Administrative Region of the Peoples Republic of China, after over 442 years of Portuguese rule.
In 2005, Macau historic centre was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Macau has its own currency, Pataca or MOP.
